A friend of mine who works with one of our partner organizations, posted this on her Facebook.
“I need Africa more than Africa needs me.”
I love this quote, mostly because I feel the same way. Africa is my passion. Working to change the lives of those in Africa fulfills my life. I needed Africa in order to take my transplant and change it into something positive. Africa provided me with a purpose to live, a purpose to get through the pain and struggle that I was going through that summer. Africa acted as a distraction, a dream, that took away my worries about lab results or upcoming tests away for a moment.
Today, Africa provides me with an escape. Kids Caring 4 Kids is a blessing in my life. I’m going to be honest, high school and middle school are tough. Filled with a bunch of hormonal teenagers, high school and middle school can suck the life out of you. Focusing my attention on others, I can escape from the pointless drama of school. Instead of basing my happiness on “fitting in” and “staying cool”, I am able to gain joy from helping others. Africa enabled me to step outside myself. Giving to Africa is the most selfish thing I do because it makes ME feel good. I need Africa more than Africa needs me.
